Soldiers & Students
Soldiers & Students is the PepperSpray Collective’s contribution to counter military recruiting. There are 6 individual short pieces on
this DVD. Each is strong in its own way. Taken together, they form something more powerful than the sum of its parts. Here is the voice of soldiers and students struggling to find their own moral compass in a time of illegal war and inquisition. With the usual authority figures disgraced, youth are forced to make decisions with life and death consequences. These soldiers and students choose humanity over uniform. This DVD is sharp, powerful, and uplifting.

Soldiers and Students Segments:

1)“A Private Says ‘No.’”
7 min 50 sec, Paricia Boiko,
PepperSpray Productions —The story of an Army Private First Class who returned from Iraq and deserted to Canada with his wife and four children, claiming refugee status.

2)Sgt. Pinocchio, the story of a military puppet"
A counter-recruiting piece. An animated Sgt Pinocchio experiences acute
nose-growing when faced with actual stories of the military by recent
veterans and GI resisters. Members of the PepperSpray Collective
observed high school students watching counter-recruiting videos and
felt that even the good videos didn't keep their attention. We came up
with this piece in hopes it would keep students watching.

3) “Recruiters Off Campus”
8 min 58 sec, Laura Dean & Randy Rowland, PepperSpray Productions
A news report on the campaign to force military recruiters out of Seattle schools. It includes the Garfield HS PTSA’s stand against recruiting in schools, the campaign to get the school board to limit recruiter access to schools, and some powerful and previously unbroadcast footage of students at SCC forcing recruiters off their campus.

4) “Nov 2nd Student Walkout” —
10 min 19 sec, Lila Kitaeff, PepperSpray Productions
This report on student activism was filmed “indymedia style,” by the students themselves at Seattle's November 2nd student walkout against war and military recruitment in schools.

5) “The  Battle For America”
3 min 45 sec, Alrick A. Brown
Many young people join the military out of a sense of service and duty. This piece, the emotional climax of the DVD, is an uplifting call to duty, to enlist in the fight to save our nation, already circling the moral drain.
Bonus Features
1) “Judas Goat”
2 min 9 sec, Randy Rowland, PepperSpray Productions
In the slaughterhouse a trained animal which leads the others to their deaths is called a “judas goat.” This short piece suggests that military recruiters play a similar role.
